Course General


The Passage Planning and Pilotage Simulator (PPPS) Course is a bespoke course designed for intending and qualified seafarers. The course provides the basic underpinning passage planning and marine pilotage operations knowledge and skill for participants in accordance with the National Occupational Standards for Marine Pilotage. The course is open to interested deck cadets and officers who desire a career in marine pilotage operations.

Aim and Objectives


The aim of the PPPS Course is to provide delegates, with little or no previous onboard experience, with the theoretical knowledge and skills required of a marine pilot. The key objectives are:
  • Acquiring relevant data to facilitate the act of pilotage
  • Preparing the port pilotage plan
  • Re-assessing the plan and modifying as necessary
  • Understanding the use of anchors
  • Understanding GPS limitations in pilotage
  • Identifying the significance of meteorological trends
  • Understanding the supervision of mooring operations
  • Understanding the basic principles of ship handling
  • Understanding the principles of coastal navigation
  • Understanding position and position line
  • Understanding the automatic pilot systems

Course Description


The course is a twelve week simulator based training with various classes of pilotage operations

Teaching Methods


The course shall be a blend of interactive classroom instructions and discussion followed by realistic practical exercises using the Simulators.

Entry Requirement


National Diploma/Higher National Diploma in Nautical Science. • Officer of the Watch (Deck) Certificate of Competence. • Ratings (Deck) with not less than 12 months of sea time. 

Target Audience


The course is designed for existing pilots who desire to improve their pilotage skills and deck officers, cadets and ratings who desire a career in marine pilotage operations.

The simulator training will be conducted at the Hudson Trident Training Center (HTTC) located at No 6, Shaffi Sule Street, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos State, Nigeria.
